A Day In The Life of an Advocate
9:00 AM - A Way Out
Compass Center advocates are just starting their day when the office doorbell rings.
Taylor arrives at Compass Center with only the clothes on their back. After months of abuse and escalating threats, they know it’s time to leave. An advocate sits down with Taylor and listens. Together, they spend the next hour building a safety plan: Taylor will travel to stay with a safe family member in a nearby state
Your gift buys Taylor a train ticket and a new phone that can't be tracked. By noon, Taylor will be on a train, taking a courageous first step toward a safer future.
12:00 PM - Someone In Their Corner
Six months ago, your generosity helped her install new locks and a doorbell camera, offering peace of mind for her and her young child while they waited for the order to be served. Now, Cierra faces another obstacle: she can’t afford childcare, has no one to watch her child during the hearing, and risks losing her job after missing work for her case.
Today, your gift helps cover childcare and transportation to court. Tomorrow, an advocate will meet Cierra at the courthouse, helping her navigate the legal process and offering support as she faces her former partner. Because of you, the cost of seeking safety doesn’t become another barrier.
3:00 PM- A Safe Place For a Family to Begin Again
Lauren has just been assaulted by her partner. She is weeks away from giving birth, and it isn’t safe for her to go home.
Lauren calls our crisis 24/7 line, and a Compass Center advocate helps her make a plan. Lauren will move into one of our Safe Homes emergency shelter apartments. She’ll have the whole apartment to herself, including a nursery with a crib and changing table for her baby. The fridge will be stocked, and she’ll receive gift cards for clothing, toiletries, and other essentials.
Because of your generosity, Lauren can stay as long as she needs to give birth, recover, and transition into safe, permanent housing.
A Day In The Life Of An Advocate, Made Possible By You.
Taylor needed a way out. Cierra needed someone beside her in court. Lauren needed a safe place to bring her baby home. And tomorrow, someone else will ring our doorbell.
Last year, our community of donors helped a record number of people experiencing relationship abuse: nearly 2,000. The need is still growing. At a time when federal and state funding for domestic violence services is being cut, we’re counting on neighbors like you to help us meet it.
