At Compass Center, Survivors Find More Than Help—They Find Community
Compass Center is a vital resource for survivors of domestic violence in Orange County and we need you now more than ever to keep these life-saving services available.
Why Compass Center?
Amy never thought she would be in an abusive relationship, but abuse doesn’t always start with violence—it often starts with control. Slowly, she found herself isolated from friends, making excuses to stop doing the things she loved, and blaming herself. The first time she called 911, she downplayed what had happened. The second time, she was terrified. That’s when a sheriff’s deputy handed her a flyer for Compass Center.
"I had friends, but they hadn’t been through it. They just told me to leave. It was so much more complicated than that. I needed people who understood."
At Compass Center, Amy found more than help—she found a community. Support groups gave her connection and validation. Staff helped her create a safety plan. She began to imagine a life beyond abuse. Eventually, she got out. But she says that without Compass Center’s support and guidance, she might not have.
"I really do think it saved my life."
Domestic violence isn’t just a personal issue—it’s a community issue. When survivors have nowhere to turn, the effects ripple through all of us. Children exposed to violence struggle in school and are more likely to experience abuse as adults. Survivors fleeing unsafe homes often face homelessness, financial instability, and legal hurdles that make rebuilding nearly impossible. And when we don’t invest in solutions, the cycle continues—affecting workplaces, schools, healthcare systems, and the safety of our neighborhoods.
Every Dollar Doubled Through June 30, 2025
This work is urgent—and it’s at risk. In 2025, federal funding for domestic violence services in North Carolina is expected to drop by 96.6%. That means fewer resources, fewer safe spaces, and fewer chances to find the support that saved Amy’s life.
But today, you can do something powerful.
A generous donor has pledged to match every gift up to $15,000—but only until June 30. That means your gift goes twice as far:
- Twice the opportunity for safety
- Twice the opportunity for support
- Twice the opportunity for community
Your donation today ensures no survivor is turned away.
Make a Difference with Your Gift
Your donation can make an immediate impact in ways that matter:
- $125 covers one night in a hotel when our safe homes are full.
- $250 replaces a slashed tire, ensuring survivors have reliable transportation.
- $500 helps set up security cameras and new locks for up to 3 survivors feeling unsafe.
- $1,000 facilitates multiple support group sessions, providing survivors with essential community and healing.
- $5,000 funds a month of rent and utilities for all three of our safe home apartments, giving families a secure place to heal and rebuild.
Your Impact
Because of generous supporters like you, Compass Center has served over 22,000 people in Orange County in the past five years. That’s 22,000 individuals who found support, advocacy, safety, and a path forward. Your gift today continues that legacy—and ensures we can show up for the next survivor who needs us.
